Marina Geertsema

Marina Geertsema received her drama training at Potchefstroom and later her MA in Drama at the Pretoria Technikon, where she also lectured for twenty years. She voice coached, directed student productions and taught various disciplines of interpretation. She developed the talents of such noted South African stage personalities as Elzabe Zietsman and Steve Hofmeyr. After her move to Oudtshoorn, she remained involved in the theatre for another ten years, producing and acting in radio dramas for disadvantaged audiences. She has two sons and lives in Still Bay.

Kosblik

Uit Afrikaans sal ’n kosblik vertaal word as ‘lunchbox’, maar die titel van die boek is Kos Blik. Kyk na kos; m.a.w. ‘views on food’.

Opvallend is die verskeidenheid in die kossoorte. Etes rondom ’n vuur; potjiekos in allerhande vorme (selfs poedings) is volop, maar ook skaapkoppe, varkvet en kaiings. In teenstelling daarmee garnale en waterblombredie. Brood kom by verskeie skrywers ter sprake, onthou hoe dit geknie en opgedis is.Gerrit Rautenbach besing selfs die gewone toebroodjie.

Dis ’n wye versameling van skrywers wat ’n storie aan kos koppel. Van uiters gesofistikeerd tot gewone mense se kyk na kos. Van platteland tot stad en van begrafnis-tot huweliks-, harts-, verlang-kos en kos uit elke skrywer se wêreld. Ook sommer van Europa, Sjina, Indië of Kaaps.

Soms is daar totale oordadigheid. Wilna Adriaanse vertel, onopgesmuk, van haar familie se gewoonte om vir ’n bruilof of begrafnis bymekaar te kom. Almal slaap oor, al slaap die kinders onder die tafel! Hulle bak sommer twaalf brode op een slag!

Kerneels Breytenbach beskryf, hoogs gesofistikeerd, van ’n voorbereiding wat deur dae strek (met baie potte om te was) om een gereg te berei.


Meestal is dit 'n viering van kos en die vreugde daaraan, maar 'n paar bydraes gaan juis oor die gebrek aan voeding. Helena Gunter vertel van padkos wat met sorg berei is, maar nie geëet kon word nie. Willemien Brümmer se Fees is ’n onstellende verhaal oor verlies wat sy aan kos koppel: ’n fees wat nie gevier kan word nie.

Die skryfstyl wissel ook; van hogere Afrikaans tot gewone streekstaal en soms ietwat hoogdrawend. Tussen die stories en anekdotes is selfs ’n hand vol gedigte.


Baie bydraes maak staat op nostalgie; verlange na die kos van hul vroeër tyd. Dikwels is dit Ouma of Ma se kos wat onthou word. Ook nostalgie oor die maniere waarop kos voorberei was.

Die samesteller, Nicole Jaekel Strauss, het gevra dat een of ander vorm van ’n resep by die storie ingesluit word. Soms word resepte tot op die gram beskryf, maar dikwels word die proses eerder in die teks ingeskryf . Veral tekste oor broodmaak: “jy knie tot jou hande skoon is”.

’n Resensent het opgemerk dat daar ’n gemis aan kosse soos samp-en-bone (Oos-Kaap) en Putu (Vrystaat) is. Ekself mis ook bydraes oor “marogo” wat in die ou Transvaal gesog was by swart vroue om bredie te maak. Die bydraes kom egter van Afrikaanse skrywers en hul verskei kulture. Daar is o.a. ’n mooi bydrae van Dine van Zyl oor wortelbredie by ’n begrafnis; daarmee saam kom sommer ook interssante inligting oor slawe aan die Kaap.


Reenboognasie is ons! Die uiteenlopendheid is daar. Hierdie boek dra by dat mens meer begrip van ander mense se etery kan kry.
