you swim
or like fresh sardines
you are packed
in boats
you leave
to live. 

you leave
gold in the belly of Africa
oil in the tummy of Africa
diamond in the stomach of Africa
you leave to live
like Lilongwe's beggars
in the middle of plenty 

you leave
your mother's tongue behind
your history behind
your dances and folklore
your pride
to live like filth
chasing a dream while
trampled upon
in silence 

the golden streets
the skyscrapers
the fly-overs
are at times
bitter than Lilongwe's
