Here, the motif is conceived of as a seesaw (the typo in the title is intended, as this drawing is part of a series linked to the motion of the ocean). Just as the slash connotes either/or, the figures here can be seen as bobbing up and down, either on the ground or in the air. Plus, the graphic representation of the slash looks very much like the low-tech plaything that is the seesaw.
