If you were to be asked the question, "What is more important in a piece of writing, the words or the spaces between the words?" you might well answer, "The words of course. Without words there is no piece of writing." But think a little further. If there were no spaces between the words the words would all run together and then it would be impossible to make any sense of what is written.
So the spaces between the words give meaning to the words. But we have a tendency to ignore the negative without realizing that it is of equal importance as the positive . They cannot exist independent of each other. They are two sides of the same coin.
The paintings are an attempt to articulate overlooked negative space.
