Crushed Velvet

By  Vanessa Herman
What is a woman who is too strong called?

Is she the fathomless tides that bleed her?

Is she the deepest sound of a moon that will always evade her?

Is she a darkness fuelled by the silence of death?

Does she hope for 'The Marlboro Man' to jump off the screen into her arms?

Does she want to stub out his burning lust with her bee-sting lips?

Is she me?

My voice a gravel road, ....my heart, a sniper poised on the roof of your well meaning words.

Those very words.... that serve to bend me into a disabled with doubt question mark.

Why must I be an acrobat on the tightrope of your smile?

Why must I make myself less than so you can be more?

Why must I practice such soul destroying subtraction?

Is there a way I can avoid this gender arithmetic?

What is a woman who is too strong called?

I liked the poem very much, so much that i am thinking of translating it to Bangla, my mother tongue ( I am from India).

The bullet went clean through me. Gutsy. Powerful.
