This issue took issue with ideas of the real (and by extension, representation). The search for "authenticity" has becomes something of a pop culture preoccupation - in a world of fake brands (as though the originals have some kind of divine meaning), tourism that seeks out authentic experiences, silicone breasts, not-entirely trustable narrative and lies, damned lies. Celebrity worship (Melinda Shaw), genetically modified food (Kristin Palitza), Michael Jackson impersonators (Daniel Klawansky) and the irrepresible kitsch of fully-clothed porn are some of the ideas that go under the microscope. Although at times its not clear if the issue celebrates or condems authenticity, it makes for a delicious blend of irony and earnestness.
